Rodent proofing, also called exclusion, is the work of sealing every opening a rat or mouse can use to get into your home. It is the step that decides whether a rodent problem ends or comes back. Socal Rodent Control includes it in every plan and backs it with a 2-year warranty.
Where Rodents Get In
Homes across Los Angeles County have the same weak spots, whether it is a 1920s bungalow in San Pedro or a 1950s tract home in Lakewood:
- Roofline and eaves. Gaps where the roof meets the fascia, damaged soffit, and the space around roof-mounted vents. Roof rats reach these from trees, power lines, and fences.
- Attic and foundation vents. Old or torn screens are an open door.
- Pipe and utility openings. Where water lines, gas lines, AC lines, and cable enter the house.
- Garage doors. Worn bottom seals and gaps at the corners.
- Crawl space access. Loose or missing covers and gaps along the stem wall.
- Chimneys and dryer vents. Especially when caps or flaps are missing.
A mouse needs about a quarter inch to squeeze through. We check every one of these areas, because leaving even one open is how the next group gets in.
How We Seal Them
The material has to fit the spot and hold up to chewing. We use galvanized hardware cloth over vents, sheet metal and mesh at roofline gaps, steel wool packed with exterior sealant around pipes, and new sweeps or seals on garage and entry doors. We do not rely on expanding foam by itself, since rats chew through it in minutes.

Proofing Works Best as Part of the Full Job
If rodents are already inside, sealing comes after rodent extermination, so nothing is trapped inside the walls. After that, attic decontamination removes the urine and scent trails that draw new rodents to the same spots. In a home with a crawl space, crawl space cleanup and screening finish the job underneath.
