Signs of Rats in Your House: 9 Clues to Watch For

The most common signs of rats in a house are scratching or running noises at night, droppings along walls or in the attic, gnaw marks on wood and wiring, grease marks along baseboards, and a musky or ammonia smell. Pets acting strangely near walls or ceilings is another clue.

Rats are good at staying out of sight. They move at night, travel along walls, and nest in places you rarely look. But they leave clues. Here are nine signs to watch for.

1. Noises in the Ceiling or Walls

Scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds after dark are often the first sign. In Southern California, noise overhead usually points to roof rats in the attic. Noise below the floor points to rats in a crawl space.

2. Droppings

3. Gnaw Marks

Rats chew constantly to keep their teeth in check. Look for fresh chew marks on wood, plastic, food packaging, and wiring. Chewed wires in the attic are a fire risk.

4. Grease Marks and Rub Marks

Rats follow the same routes and their oily fur leaves dark smudges along baseboards, beams, and around holes they use.

5. Nests

Shredded insulation, paper, fabric, and plant material bundled together in a hidden spot. Common places are attics, wall voids, garages, and storage boxes.

6. A Musky or Ammonia Smell

Rat urine has a strong ammonia smell that builds up over time, especially in enclosed spaces like attics.

7. Burrows Outside

Norway rats dig burrows along foundations, under sheds, and beneath concrete slabs. Look for holes about two to four inches wide with packed dirt around them.

8. Pets Acting Strangely

Dogs and cats hear and smell rats before we do. If your pet keeps staring at a wall, pawing at a cabinet, or barking at the ceiling, pay attention.

9. Damaged Food and Chewed Fruit

Half-eaten fruit in the yard, especially citrus and avocados still on the tree, is a classic roof rat sign. Inside, look for chewed bags in the pantry.
