How to Get Rid of Rats in Your Garage

To get rid of rats in the garage, remove food sources such as pet food and bird seed, clear clutter off the floor, set snap traps along the walls where you see droppings, and seal gaps, especially the bottom of the garage door. Sealing is the step that keeps them from coming back.

The garage is one of the first places rats settle. It is sheltered, full of places to hide, and often has food. It is also a common starting point for rats that later move into the attic and walls. Here is how to clear them out.

Why Rats Like Garages

• Easy access. Garage door seals wear out, and corners often have gaps big enough for a rat.
• Food. Pet food, bird seed, grass seed, and extra pantry items are often stored here.
• Shelter. Boxes, piles of wood, and stored furniture make good nesting spots.
• Quiet. Less foot traffic than the rest of the house.

Step 1: Remove Food

Move pet food, bird seed, and grass seed into sealed metal or heavy plastic containers. Do not store open bags on the floor.

Step 2: Clear Clutter

Get boxes and stored items off the floor and away from walls. Use sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard, which rats chew and nest in.

Step 3: Trap

Set snap traps along the walls, where rats travel, especially near droppings or gnaw marks. Place them perpendicular to the wall with the trigger facing the wall. Keep traps away from children and pets.

Step 4: Seal the Garage

This step decides whether the problem comes back:

• Replace the bottom seal on the garage door.
• Add rodent guards to the door’s side corners.
• Seal gaps where pipes and wires pass through walls.
• Screen any vents with galvanized mesh.
• Check the door between the garage and the house for gaps.
